Horse Creek Academy is proud to announce the launch of HCA LIFEworks, an innovative new program beginning in the 2026–2027 school year designed to help students with disabilities develop the academic, employment, independent living, and life skills needed for success beyond graduation.
Created by Horse Creek Academy educator Valerie Steen, HCA LIFEworks will provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for adulthood through workplace readiness training, vocational skill development, community engagement, and practical application of daily living skills.
Students enrolled in the program will have opportunities to participate in school-based enterprises, community-based instruction, and job training experiences that allow them to practice skills in authentic environments. Through these experiences, students will build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections within the community while developing skills that support a successful transition into adulthood.
“The goal of HCA LIFEworks is simple,” said program developer Valerie Steen. “We want our students to leave school with the skills, confidence, and experience they need to live as independently as possible and to become valued members of their community.”
To support students as they develop workplace readiness and transition skills, Horse Creek Academy has also added a dedicated Job Coach position within the program. Serving in this role is Kaci Mize, who brings extensive experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Prior to joining Horse Creek Academy, Mize served as a Waiver Coordinator with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, where she reviewed and evaluated service plans and policies supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other lifelong disabilities. She also previously worked as a case manager, collaborating with schools, service providers, and state agencies to help individuals access services and achieve their goals through a person-centered approach.
As Job Coach, Mize will help students identify their strengths, develop workplace readiness skills, and gain confidence through meaningful real-world employment experiences.
A key component of the HCA LIFEworks Program will be the creation of a dedicated Life Skills Learning Lab on campus. As a brand-new initiative, the program is beginning with an empty space that will be transformed into a fully functioning learning environment where students can practice independent living, vocational, and employment skills through hands-on learning opportunities.
Funds raised in support of HCA LIFEworks will go directly toward purchasing equipment, appliances, curriculum materials, vocational training supplies, and other resources that provide students with opportunities to learn, grow, and gain independence.
“Every student deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, contribute to their community, and build a future filled with possibility,” said Dr. Ann Marie Taylor, Head of School. “HCA LIFEworks is a beautiful example of what can happen when we intentionally create opportunities that honor each student's unique abilities. We are excited to watch this program open doors for our students and families for years to come.”
Horse Creek Academy has long been committed to creating inclusive opportunities for all learners, and HCA LIFEworks represents an exciting new chapter in that mission. By connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences, the program will empower students to build confidence, develop independence, and prepare for meaningful futures beyond high school.
Additional information about HCA LIFEworks, including community partnerships and opportunities to support the program, will be shared in the coming months. If you would like to contribute to this amazing program, be sure to check out their GoFundMe
